This problem had a simple solution -- update the alsa driver. I am
using a special alsa driver that is proprietary to a commercial company
that supplies a software driver for a particular card in my computer.
While I had been manually updating that card's driver with each kernel

Okay, I'm sorry, I should have checked that before. The card is actually
recognized if it is already inserted on boot. It just does not show up if it is
inserted after logging in.
Getting a connection with the card after it shows up is also not possible,

Martin,
I thought I had an MTA and the logs didn't show any errors about not
being able to send the e-mail. I have sent the e-mail manually with the
contents of the file that bugreport generated.
I am sorry for not checking on this before.
Thanks for sponsoring.
