I have experienced the same problem. I have tested Karmic today and saw
no improvements. However, 2.6.31-rc5 may solve it according to
http://osdir.com/ml/linux-kernel/2009-08/msg00222.html
I will not get around to try 2.6.31-rc5 any time soon, so please try
that and see if it helps.

I've found a way around this. I have absolutely no idea why it's
working. It's based entirely on trial and error and hunches. But it may
be useful to others.

Getting the fix into hardy may be non-trivial, since the patch seems to
depend on the function g_set_error_literal, which is, i assume, not
implemented in pre-intrepid glib (attached build errors for hardy).
This function is implemented here:

I just compiled the 2.6.30.6-Kernel from www.kernel.org with ath9k
support as module as it is in linux-2.6.31-9. My atheros WLAN is now
working properly and the system freezes are history.
My system has an uptime of 50 minutes now (with wireless connected to
AP) and everything seems to work fine.
Chris, I'm pretty sure the alert wasn't presented by Metacity, because I
was running Compiz.
