pavucontrol solved my problems. Only thing I needed to do is change from
'Analog Output' to 'Analog Output / Amplifier' in output devices tab.
Only remaining issue is that sound is muted every time I boot my laptop.

*by name*. If you rename the file to something else then gedit treats it

You do not need to enable just 1 codec, SIP is a negotiation mechanism;
it will find an agreement if you enable several codecs. There is also
priority order: in Ekiga preferences the more you push a codec on top of
the list, the more it get higher priority.

I am running 8.10, yet I have the same behavior on a Jaunty machine I use at
work (even slightly worse).
All my 8.10 and 9.04 drivers are updated.

This happened to me after accepting today's update, and restarting
firefox has not helped.
What is more both help-about and edit-preferences produce an empty
window of size zero. I get a tiny border of zero width and small
height, and when stretched to a reasonable size it has no contents.

I have experienced a similar issue, and I've concluded the problem is an
interaction between xrandr and the ATI fglrx drivers.
My video card has a TV output, and the display flickers whenever xrandr
probes the card. According to Bug #134365 the Intel driver suffered a
similar problem, way back dur
I'm pretty sure that it hasn't changed; this is actually rather
difficult to fix because of the multiple conflicting requirements on
console-setup's use of debconf. However, it would be trivial for
somebody to actually test it rather than having to ask ...
