I did an upgrade from jaunty to karmic, and did not hit this problem. The current version is a bit newer (2.10.1-0ubuntu2). There's nothing obvious in its preinst script that would indicate failure. If you can reproduce this, could you run the preinst script with the -x option so we have a chance
