I'm glad to inform you that now brightness *DO* react to brightnessup and
brightnessdown scripts (/etc/acpi/video_*
) and seems fixed. The second check was the problem, definitely =).
Also "brightness gnome applet" and "brightness gnome control" (as gnome panel
add-on) wok well.
Fixed in the OpenPrinting database upstream, but please answer my
question of the previous comment, so that we can perhaps find a better
solution.

ubuntu doesn't use the local directory that's for local install, you
installed a version which takes over the ubuntu one and create the bug,
not an ubuntu issue but a local install bug
