ok, now I tested both mainline kernels v2.6.29.4 and v2.6.30.
all kernels work well with "acpi=off".
If I remove "acpi=off" kernel 2.6.29 behaves same as 2.6.28 (delivered with
ubuntu 9.04) - systems hangs at "loading, please wait..."

This is from the "Known Issues" of the Alpha 2 release:
"Due to the conversion to GRUB2, installation will fail if you try to
install Karmic Alpha 2 on a system with other OSes installed. This will
be fixed for Alpha 3. As a workaround in the meantime, you can choose to
use GRUB1 instead by bootin

Did "apport-collect" but with wrong kernel - I'm just testing 2.6.30 :/
I'll do it later again with 2.6.28 kernel.
I just tested mainline kernels:
* 2.6.29-02062904-generic
* 2.6.30-020630-generic
both kernels work well with "acpi=off".
If I remove "acpi=off" kernel 2.6.29 behaves same as 2.6.28

Updating to Pidgin 2.5.6 resolved the bug.
Unfortunately, this update will not reach most users because "Ubuntu
ships Pidgin but does not update it after a release (except for security
issues). For those users who desire new releases of Pidgin, we have
packaged Pidgin in a PPA."
