I talked to Alam Lenny on IRC about PulseAudio, and my initial problem with
0.9.15 is solved. By setting flat-volumes = no to daemon.conf, my volume
doesn't get reset when a new stream is opened, nor does the volume change on
app level in pavucontrol reset it.

and the error I get when running from the konsole is

today i tested it with a fresh installation of Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10

It might be interesting to know that the problem also occurs when using
gvncviewer (on jaunty). I started my vm using virt-manager and verified
(in /proc/../cmdline) that kvm is spawned with "-k de".
Eventually, both gvncviewer and virt-manager use libgtk-vnc, which might
be the place to look for.
There is not evident work being done in this bug. Despite there is a
package for zsnes in intrepid amd64 it seems to be impossible for users
have an amd64 package on jaunty or karmic. If the problem is that zsnes
is in the Packages-arch-specific file can someone contact the maintainer
for removing

It is fixed on Ubuntu 9.04 and was fixed/closed in the main gtkpod src
