I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.29.4, but this problem with the lid is still
present. I'm still researching the precise situation, but sometimes my
hp 2140 behaves correctly when I close the lid, in my case that's means

I have tested the packages in your ppa and they work fine. The speed is
improved in the same way. Desktop effects works, games work. I
haven't tested wined3d yet. My R300 always had graphical glitches in
wine with these drivers anyhow. Now I just need more testers.

Comments like that really don't help. Moreover, this is a kernel issue
that is affecting all distributions across the board; I recently came to
Ubuntu from Fedora where it was just as bad.
However, things are looking pretty good for getting this fixed by

naming is not really coherent and it would be nice to fix it but adding

The erlang-base package includes the erlang compiler as well as the
erlang runtime.
In the interests of providing a small runtime for deploying
applications, it would be nice to split the compiler out into a separate
package.

Not a audio expert and all, but the last known major change to hda-intel
was enabling powersave mode.
Could you try reloading the module without the powersave options?
