I forgot about atop. I am attaching the atop log for that day. The
timeframe where I experienced the worst of the problem where I gave up
on FF after 10 minutes is about 12:56 in the log. Later that day apprx
16:00+, I restarted X to regain some usability.

For now, I found out that writing a brightness value to
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness saves the brightness (you

Oh oh, If I open pulse-audio control (pavucontrol) and terminate the
python audio stream, miro is unfreezed and the video continues (!!!),
but without sound (of course).
BTW, I don't like GStreamer because it plays the video in slowmotion...

Good to hear that switching to UXA solved the problem. We couldn't
enable this by default on Jaunty because of quite a few other problems
on some hardware (see ), but it is a useful workaround for many. The
non-UXA (i.e. EXA and XXA) has been deleted from the newer versions of

taking multiple tries and the problem of the connection just dropping

I get part of this, I created an alarm and tested email for a friend who
was having problems with his, I'm getting what he got, 94 emails sent
for a single alarm.
I had no problem using my kmail identity though.

I don't clue regard this error in jaunty so i decide to compile the
latest stable snort's (anyway i thing that's the best solution for
security sw) version and last but not least i also pachetize snort. I
attach the binary here (I don't what's the procedure for acceptance by
Ubuntu repos) meantime

Are you getting the login screen when you try to shut down or does the system
go through the normal shutdown sequence but not turn off? The acpi kernel
option should only affect power-off, not the shutdown sequence (which is what
this bug is about).

This issue also appears to be fixed in OOo 3.1.0 which is in Karmic and
the ppa, does the ppa version work for you as well? You don't have to
upgrade to it if you don't want to, but it seems to resolve this and
many other problems. The url for the ppa is in this launchpad bug report
in a pre

Confirmed problem on Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64 Jaunty. I am running in Intel
Core 2 Quad Q9650 CPU, and the update-apt-xapian process takes 100% of
one core. As of this writing, it has run for 468:50:30 according to top
with no end in sight. This is absurd.
I tried purging the package and killing the pro
