I can change sampling_rate to 4 with the 2.6.28-12 kernel, but not
the 2.6.30-rc7 kernel. Values equal to or above 8 are fine.

I am having the exact same issue. htop report CPU1 (2nd) @ 100% while
top say it's 1%. System Monitor (Gnome) report CPU1 (2nd) as hard-drive
activity. The kernel seems to be unstable, freezing while rebooting,
booting and using.

I have been having this same issue with Jaunty 64-bit and a geforce 8600
gt. Flash gets really choppy in fullscreen and in some cases even
without going to fullscreen. Switching to metacity makes no difference.

I can confirm it as well and I find it as very important for me. We share this
PC home and we all are often login and just switch users. I would appreciate
any other solution than turning back to windows. If this the aim of ATI, they
will probably succeed until I will buy new PC with NVIDIA :-)

You can force dpkg to overwrite files by adding the --force-overwrite
param to the command to install the bootlogd .deb:
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite bootlogd_2.86.02_*.deb
Tested this on jaunty and it produces a nice /var/log/bootmsg file.

More thoughts:
- I was too hasty, reconnecting to hidden networks seems to work BUT ONLY when
I have one visible network set to auto connect. The NM prioritizes the visible
network but on failure may connect to the hidden one set as auto connect as well
