Binary package hint: apport
I've recently ran into a fair number of apport-package bug reports that
contain an empty or corrupted VarLogDistupgrade file. I'm uncertain how
the file ends up in this state but it makes the bug report much less
useful.
Example bugs:
bug 367714
All the bug reports seem to have a dated VarLogDistupgrade file like
VarLogDistupgrade200904231030.gz.

Thank you for taking the time to help me.
uninstalling and installing the package worked great.
I did get this:

but dictclient is now up and running.

My statement about display managers was somewhat wrong: The MTRR fix has
an effect on both the G35 and i915 using the 2.4 driver. Using the 2.6
driver, it only has an effect on the older i915 chipset. It does not
matter whether the X server is started by GDM or via startx.

I just allowed firefox updates for Hardy Heron and now I cannot see the
version by clicking on Help/About. A very small window opens that you
can barely see, but then when you enlarge it by dragging its edges, it
is totally blank.
