I'd been looking for solutions and trying different configuration
settings for hours, kept thinking I was doing something wrong in the
configuration.
Changing the permissions on the scanner fixed it! Oddly enough I
installed Debian 5.0 on this machine a few weeks ago and it setup the

has problems with USB devices plugged in at boot time (presumably on Windows):

FWIW, I noticed I was down-level on about 100 packages, including
initramfs-tools and kernel. I updated, rebooted, recreated the bootable
USB key, applied revision 618, and still did not experience the problem
seen observed by Pete.

icons, I still can't see that one.

I'm using jaunty (upgraded daily) on a Dell XPS M1330 with Nvidia 8400GS
graphic card video and 4GB of memory.
