Ok, so it does disable the storage interface, but my patch is not enough
because it doesn't use option_ms_init which would basically rezero the
device. It's needed for the hso driver to be able to pick up the device,

I'd like to agree with Arve's comment above. The main reason I don't
like this change is that I can't get to those options with the keyboard.

I have a Dell Bluetooth 355 internal USB.

Firefox is one of the most used applications for them. My father simply cannot

Right, my patch only fixed the original notification issue. I managed to
dwell into it a bit more and fixed those messages as well. Attached is
another patch, which would fix both problems (I'm not certain about
using "/usr/share/locale", but it seems to work even though the actual
.mo f
reinstalling didn't help me either.
it seems that firefox now has 2 flash plugins (that is what i see when i look
for installed plugins), one is from swfdec-mozilla and the other from
flashplugin-nonfree. i can disable them but not remove them from FF.

This is very unlikely a bug of notify-osd, but rather one of gnome-
settings-daemon. The program responsible for acting on these special
keys, receiving the brightness-values and spawning notifications (to
notify-osd) is gnome-settings-daemon.

Thanks for the effort - I tried that! However, the oops still happens. I
also noticed there's no need to use the vesa driver, chrome still works
but without some acceleration. (The oops is very early on, way before
the X driver could play any role in this.)

Upstream reported this crash was replaced with a memory leak. Testing
in Jaunty (gconf-editor 2.26.0) fails to reproduce the crash. Closing
as the memory leak is a very minor issue and is tracked upstream.
Please reopen if this crash reoccurs in Ubuntu.
