After 10minutes of a completely irresponsible GUI I could type glxgears to

Hmmm, its very odd that resume works with resume=/dev/foo and not with
the configured UUID file. Can you describe what you see when it fails,
it might be worth turning off usplash and quiet, and allowing this to
fail, particularly do you see "Waiting for resume device" messages.
