Seems like the monitor returns broken EDID. Not sure if there is
something the server can do better, other than maybe falling back to a
higher resolution than 800x600, or provide a tool for the user to set

I tested Mythtv frontend on my desktop system running a Jaunty Alpha 6
live CD and have the same problem, no fonts are displayed. This machine
has an no common hardware with by laptop.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Boot from the live CD.
2) Enable Extra software sources.
3) Install sux and mythtv-fronte
I use Xubuntu 8.10 on an Acer Aspirce One with the following Ethernet
card

If I assign the menu key to act as the compose key in my keyboard
preferences, I cannot actually use it as that because every time I press
it a contextual menu comes up. I can assign another function to the key
using the keyboard shortcuts tool

Same problem on an ASUS Z9200 laptop.
Display is ATI Mobility X700 (PCIE).
Extra fresh plain-vanilla Gnome 8.10 started to freeze.
Getting it up to date didn't help.
Seems to happen in the middle of anything.
E. g. dropping user switching (top right) menu down.
Also, caught it in the act of dimmin
I would appreciate if you test with a live CD. Boot with the "text"
kernel parameter so X will not be automatically started. Then log in and
update the driver (having it downloaded to an accessible drive*, or 1)
configure xorg.conf to use the vesa driver 2) start X using startx 3)
download the driv
First address in hosts MUST be 127.0.0.1, second and third address must
be in 192.168.x.y and 127.u.v.w, but order doesn't matter for the last
two.
