Can't reproduce...
My hardy rc-update.d (from sysv-rc 2.86.ds1-14.1ubuntu45.1) accepts the
"multiuser" argument:

I just looked into a friend who has the exact same issue and this can be
determined:
It's not caused soley by nvidia since he has intel drivers (
xserver-xorg-video-intel, Version: 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10.3) and he's affected. also
I have had this on several versions of nvidia drivers, up to 180.35.
