FWIW, this is 100% reproducible for me while opening a terminal and
running "xdg-open ." inside my normal home dir on a plain ext3 fs. On
this system I never mount any other file systems and I don't use any

I used to have this problem but mvo's fix removed the bug for me (I also
tried it again with latest jaunty bits just now and it's still gone). I
do see some deprecation warnings printed to the console, but the GUI
works without any problems.

sorry but i've moved back to hardy heron and not tested enough kino from now
on that system
the previous bug reports where on jaunty (kino is one of the first i install
and use on any ubuntu version)

Could those of you affected by this bug try reproducing this from VT-1.
Before reproducing could you run the following command which should
reduce the font size sidnificantly so that the entire panic is visible:
consolechars -f /usr/share/consolefonts/Uni1-VGA8.psf.gz

I just found some more info, it seems that a user has to be added to the
video group and als well again. So a:
gpasswd -a username video
and a restart will fix the problem.
