Came across this issue just last night and found the cause to be less
than insidious.
Seems that after I finished editing smb.conf, the daemon reloaded the
new file automagically. This is when the trouble started.

The original bug report seems to be a driver-specific issue with intel.
Other bug reporters should file separate bugs.
Matthias, please also re-test against Jaunty and attach a fresh

Oh, this is probably not really the proper place to bring this up, but
would it be possible to get apport-collect into hardy and intrepid as
well... :-) It is a very useful utility and would be helpful in bug
triage for the older releases as well.

I have used the release version of Intrepid (Alternate CD to the best of
my recall) to install and configure a computer for my niece. And I had
no problems with it.
So my guess is that this has been cured so where along the way.

Depending on what the cause is there isn't really anything that can be
done to fix it on the Ubuntu side. The controller I noted I saw the
problem on was the controller's fault. It was writing data to the drive
even when not in RAID mode with no regard to what the OS wanted to do
