Mergefs is a tiny python-fuse file system that merge several directory
into one allowing readwrite. Unlike other unionfs, it does the job
recursively and can handle more than two directories. It is also a good
example of python-fuse file system.

The effect of deleting /dev/nvidiactl is just to force compiz to use indirect
binding. You can accomplish this less destructively by running
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1

Can you please attach the log you get with startx, so that I can compare
it to the mga log? I don't get why it fails or quits when started from
gdm. I guess you never touched /etc/gdm/gdm.conf or gdm.conf-custom?
