The keys started working again and the brightness goes up and down.
If I press it say 4 times, then it takes a while for it to process all 4
key presses unlike the volume meter which is very fast. But at least the
brightness is working again with your xrandr comman

I've just tested with downgrading to the intrepid version of gnome-
screensaver; same results.
I've also done a bit of stracing, and the helper does get as far as
reading /etc/pam.d and loading the modules; then it falls down somewhere
around where it spawns a separate thread for PAM in order to b

when disconnected (due to signal or handover) it will not re-connect

Confirmed on Intrepid (8.10) with KDE 4.2. I was getting the same exact
error under the same exact circumstances. I tried setting the DBUS
registration to 'None" in the Konsole icon (desktop and Taskbar), and
sure enough, the problem went away. Thanks, DGMcCloud, for the
workaround.

I logged a bug for Jaunty about this, then found a temporary fix at
least. I found that If I searched the repositories using synaptic for
all nvidia drivers I found many versions but I needed nvidia-glx-180-dev
package. I installed it, ran the hardware driver gui again and bingo it
loaded the corre

I also have a Fujitsu T2010 and have experienced problems changing LCD
brightness in Intrepid (8.10). Changing brightness with the Fn+... keys

I solved the problem starting gdm with the option -dpi 96.
It seems that gmd chooses another dpi, meybe because I have a bigger
screen? 1440x900 and in the other laptop 1280x800

Yes for me compiz is the issue. Remove it and no such random locks occur
