If you get sound in some applications and not in others, it could be
that pulseaudio is misconfigured. It's a wild guess, but the device ID
could have changed between Hardy and Intrepid (due to different kernel
versions). If so, I guess the following could help:

I can confirm the proposed workaround works in an updated Ubuntu Hardy:

After a complete new installation with default settings (visualization turned
ON) there is constant flashing in the graphical pane. It is nearly impossible
to change the settings because the flashing obscures the menu drop-downs.

Ok i solved it. I had to copy my ~/.gnome2/session file to /home//.gnome2/xsession. Then edit the file and change the directory
names for the new user and the change the ownership of the file. But I
still don't know why the session file could not be created by ubuntu.

I think this is related to my problem. vpnc worked fine in 8.04 and is
now broken in 8.10. For me the resolv.conf the search entry is full of
what looks like junk so I DNS calls to my connected domain don't work.
If I manually edit after connecting to the domain I'm connecting to DNS
resolves fine
My wired network connection also stalls with long running, high speed
transfers on a new 8.10 installation. It did not occur on my other 8.10
install on a different machine. The motherboard (old and new have on-
board network connections) and video adapter have changed.

Well there I was thinking I was being a stick in the mud - yes I know
you can do this through /etc/fstab but I'd like hal or something to just
detect the volumes on my machine and automount them. I tried right
clicking on the volumes in computer:/// and configuring the options
under Drive or Volume
This is not fixed for the LTSP image in Hardy.

Then I realized you need to use sudo in front of cfdisk. using that, I
