I am currently experiencing the exact same problem with my Gateway
T-1628 laptop. After looking around various forums it seems that this
bug is being experienced by all users using any Gateway T-Series laptop.
I am currently using Ubuntu 8.10, however this problem was previously
non-existent in 8.0
I have a similar problem in Ibex 8.10, though it appears its the clock
text that is higher than everything else and is visually distracting.

Unfortunately I no longer have access to the remote machine I used when
experiencing the bug. I don't have access to _any_ remote Linux machine
actually, so I am unable to test if this bug still exists.

Yes, the issue is still present in 8.10, though behavior is a bit
different.
In current up to date Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.1, I can start kpowersave,
and leave it running, but when I reboot it is automatically replaced by
Guidance power management.
Observations:

Sorry, no luck with the 9.04 Alpha CD. I can't get a login. I get some
interesting screen junk and then I'm back to the greeter. I tried a bit
of fiddling but I couldn't find a quick resolution. It appears to be X
server related. It's probably OT for this discussion, for now.

I reboot "resolv.conf" becomes the original file without the domain name so I
figure out that this file is generated later.

the same keypress. It will not be helpful to file this on xfce4.org,
because if Alt+Shift is defined to switch layouts, it wil not work to
switch windows. You need to redifine the keypress for one of these
functions to get them

My mistake, I took another look at the Xorg log after upgrading to the
testing packages, and noticed a line saying it can't enable DRI for a
framebuffer larger than 2048 pixels in either dimension. I had set a
virtual size in xorg.conf for an extended desktop and had forgotten
about it.

I was experiencing this problem with an old uniwell laptop (intel graphics),
and have a partial resolution by changing the color depth from 24 to 16 bit,
i.e. add
DefaultDepth 16
to the screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Partial resolution means I can achieve default resolution 1280x800 at 16
