The problem if I recall correctly was there wasn't a text based browser
installed by default in the server seed. This has since changed, there was
quite the discussion on the ubutnu-server mailing list in regards to this.

I can confirm this bug with the most recent Alpha 5 updates (9/11/08).
Anytime the screensaver occurs or the screen is locked, the computer
become unresponsive. Keyboard and mouse is unresponsive. The screen goes
black, and the screensaver does not start. This occurs when compiz is
enabled.

I'd like to explore the fact that your hardware is generating spurious
interrupts. I'd just like you to try various boot options to make
certain I've covered the IRQ side of things a bit more thoroughly. Can
you try the following boot options:
irqfixup=1
(and possibly irqfixup=2)
pci=biosir
It's not necessary to apply this as a patch to the Ubuntu package as
GNOME 2.24 will be in Intrepid. We'll pick up the change when the
package gets updated.

yes, the problem seems to come from the order of the hard disks, something that
is decided by the bios.
unplugging disks, like X3 suggested, is a workaround, but it obviously cannot
be the solution. we need to find a better way to do this...
