I am having the same problems with Intrepid Alpha 5, after having had no
problems with sound with either Gutsy or Hardy. When I first boot up, I
get a sound before my login screen comes up - but after that, no system
sounds at all. Other sounds come through OK. When I go to System >

I downloaded the Alpha-5 live CD and tried this out. It's still not
working, but the failure mode is definitely different that that of 8.04.

I see the same problem (in Intrepid, but it was also the case in Hardy)
on a Sony Viao laptop with i945GM chipset :
