I have the same problem on Arch Linux, althought since they changed the kernel
to version 2.6.26.3, hal updates every 30 seconds the battery status.
There's still some problems, for example it seems hal's battery information
might not be correct, because my laptop shuts down when it still has 15

I have a Dell Vostro 1310 here with ALC268 and was suffering from the same
problem. Installing the 2.6.27 kernel from here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/pub/next/2.6.27-rc3/hardy/ has fixed the problem.
However,
With the same setup, I experience some delay in calendar, but nothing as
drastic as described here.
Regarding spell checking, there is the menu "options" in the window
containing your new message, it includes the entry automatic spell
checking.
