I too have encountered this issue and did not find the chmod command
mentioned above to be of much help. A better way in my view is to fix
the init.d script. The directory containing the socket file should be

We don't currently have a font viewer for intrepid so I was wondering if
the old gnome-font-viewer could be repackaged here? I'm not sure if an
alternative exists at the moment.

I get this bug too in 8.10 Xubuntu, installed using alternate installer.
It was the daily build from 31/08/08, with all updates. It seems to
crash soon after login.

Thanks for the update. I'll start testing with drives in the affected
controller (was using a PCI card with a different chipset to get around
the issue) to see if it's still a problem in Hardy, and will plan on
testing 2.6.27 when Alpha5 is released.
