I have found out what is going on. Basically only very short clicks get
recognised (i.e. short time between press and release). This appears to
be a feature to make scrolling work properly. If there is any bug here
it is a relatively minor one of documentation because this feature will
not be obvio

I can confirm that the bug is not fixed.
I've installed Intrepid on my system but I can't test totem 2.23.x because
there is a regression in the kernel and my dvb device is not recognized atm.
In the next days I'll try to boot Intrepid with an older or newer kernel too
