OK, problem solved. What the error was actually saying was "Cannot find /usr/local/lib/libz.so" -- the Sunfreeware Python package doesn't appear to be able to accept /usr/lib/libz.so, it has to have /usr/local/lib/libz.so. Loading up the SMCzlib package cured that problem, but that was not all.
