I tracked this down to a network setting. I had set a domain name, but only
run Windows as a workgroup.
Once I removed the Domain, the synaptics package manager started working in the
GNOME environment.

I can't confirm the first issue, but when setting "/" to a partition
that already existed, it did give me a a resize message saying it must
do that before anything else, and that it could take awhile. I was
confused and just hit "Go back", and it didn't do the resize but kept my

I'd argue that it's more than not useful, it's extremely annoying and
misleading. We have two dell laptops in the house that had this
