Coincidentally I upgraded from gutsy to hardy yesterday and found that
this problem no longer exists, that is, I can normally logon using
xdmcp.
Must have been fixed somewhre along the way.

I use an uptodate hardy installation. I can reliably spin up the NAS
drive by calling either evince or nautilus. Whether it is those
programs themselves or a lib or something else that they use, I cannot
say. The start of those programs awakes the drive from sleep, that is
what I can say with ce

this is only necessary for 64bit. I am not using Xen myself so maybe the
question is dumb, but anyway: the host is running exactly the same
kernel as the guest? Also, have you tried the effect of swiotlb=off?
