Ok, I see. Not even one user can write to the partition?
Well, Ubuntu is using an old, unsupported, custom patched and
uncertified NTFS-3G driver with external FUSE. If the configuration is
not right then this problem can indeed happen.
I suggest removing the Ubuntu NTFS-3G package and installing
did you enable apport and restart it and then triggered the crash?

Note that the result of this fix is that /rofs will be available in the
booted system. That might fix issues that depend on this, OTOH this has

You're probably right, but today I can't reproduce it at all. I'm guessing
that it was probably one of the flash adverts that displayed along side the
page, and today the advert has been changed.

erm, heh... sorry, I somehow misread that this bug applied to a recent
daily for intrepid.
For hardy, it was fixed some time by two steps:
* dexconf detects kvm running
* I backported a fix from the cirrus driver which solved the underlying problem
(however that fix is only available for 8.04.1).
Unfortunately this is why Linux will never take off, I can see this
supermegabug appear on that pesky Linux Haters Blog.. we need a proper
cow

Hi!
A small update: Not just Ubuntu, also Xubuntu 8.04.1 comes with the
behavior of booting spontaneously at midnight (kinda logic, isn't it? :)
)
I installed Debian Etch. Etch did not show such behavior.
As a test I booted the machine with the "acpi=off" kernel parameter and
then booting at mid
I am still able to reproduce this. Now when I tried it I opened a .doc-
file by pressing Enter in Nautilus having the file selected I got the
error.
If I instead navigate to $HOME/.gvfs/... it works without copying the
file locally.
The smb:// url looks like this when I have the problem:
smb://s
This appears to have several knock-on effects to wherever gnome is instructed
to shut down. For example:
System->Preferences->Power Management->General
When the power button is pressed - Ask Me
Now when the power button is pressed it gives the logout/switch-user
options and not the Hibernate/R
