I used the proposed repos and installed the 8.6 fglrx driver to use with
my ATI Radeon HD3870 (rv670 graphics chip).
Compiz worked fine, but running anything that required 3d acceleration
or running just about anything through wine screwed up graphics --
totally fubar. The only way to fix that was

If I launched from a terminal using: "sudo synaptic" it worked every time.
