I just got my HP dv6000 laptop back from the factory after having my
Broadcom chipset replaced.
HP informed me that they replaced the brodcom chipset with a newer
version.

It seems that it was a bug in input subsystem of xorg and not in device driver.
Resent xorg updates fixed the issue - there was no useful info in kdm error log
any more after crashes - but config files were corrupted.

I think that it should be possible to connect to the repository and
check if there are any updates available without having to enter a
password.
The password should only be needed for installing the updates, not for
checking for updates.
