I am having the same problems with a Hawking HPS1U print server with my
Samsung ML-1430. My 7.10 machines print without problem but my two 8.04
computers fail to print (although they printed perfectly before

Can you try, from a command line, running "gksudo synaptic" (rather than
"sudo synaptic"). Gksudo is the GNOME dialog to give you sudo access--if
something is wrong with that, then that will block any program that

Oh, for what it's worth, they fixed the auto-removal bit by removing the
automatic install flag from every automatically installed package. Way
to kludge the system to work around the entirely flawed concept of
dependencies that they have (libc6-i686 should provide virtual package

OK, I remembered I did have another Hardy desktop install - on another
EPIA-5000. I'd abandoned that installation in favour of Gentoo (-Os
makes a big difference to usability on that hardware) but it was intact.
It's also an almost completely vanilla ubuntu-desktop install, whereas
