No, this is a bug in kdm. Window managers should put .desktop files for their sessions in /usr/share/xsessions. kdm is responsible for /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions (or /usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/apps/kdm/sessions/ for kdm-kde4). Of course, ratpoison doesn't install /usr/share/xsessions/ratpoison.des

Ummm. Embarrassingly, I failed to notice the truncated size of the file: 4294967295 bytes, or 2**32-1. This is saving the tar file to a FAT formatted usb drive, whose maximum file size is the above number. Solution: just split the file into smaller chunks, or reformat the external drive to some
