I am experiencing something similar in the final Hardy Heron release.
When I run Update Manager from the applet it hangs just before asking
for my password. This has been happening ever since I upgraded (in-
place) to Heron from Gutsy. I have tried letting it run for hours and
killing it and rest
on my system, installing libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio crackles, but much
less than libsdl1.2debian-all. So it's a bit better, but not crackle-

the reading of the MBR that's typically causes booting problems when the
drive being read doesn't exist. So there's no point doing just the MBRs
and ignoring the advanced BIOS calls in the hope that it could be
enabled by defa

however I do not agree that "metacity isn't even running" (as you are
not the submitter of the bug). Compiz-decorator by default uses
metacity unless you explicitly tell it otherwise. If you are effected

Unfortunately I didn't keep any of the logs from the first install. I
didn't actually diagnose what the issue was for a few days (I eventually
clicked as to why basic things I expected to be in the repositories
weren't showing up). Even more unfortunately, the bug did not reoccur

Sigh, should have thought of that. OK, I've got a friend with 8.04 to
look and it works fine. The gnome-help line above doesn't segfault but
politely complains. And the Help on Dominosa menu item runs `yelp
/usr/share/sgt-puzzles/help/dominosa.html' which works fine. Sorry for
the noise.

This morning i updated Evolution allowing hardy pre-release update. Not
a single crash in the whole morning, it has been stable for more than 6
hours (and i wrote several e-mails ... ). I do not know if it has been
fixed or it is just a lucky day, i just wanted to share this possible
solution.
