Hmm.. I though and read somewhere, that it's possible to combine KDE4 (effects
off) with compiz.. But it doesn't matter actually.
Because Firefox hasn't worked for me in KDE4 also.
Now I'm using KDE4 with effects and Konq is OK. Firefox is broken too.

Evince seems to assign bad value of window size in ev-metadata.xml

Edit ~/.gnome2/evince/ev-metadate.xml

I get the HAL error on my desktop too but also a number of other errors
on my laptop.
I have the saa7134 device in my desktop but nothing like that in the
laptop. The saa7134 TV tuner is not being recognised currently with the
older kernel (14) by TV tuner apps but does show in lspci correctly.

I agree, the init script is rather a clumsy approach, but I didn't know
