I find that I'm actually connected to the network but gnome seems to be
out to lunch. I find that the new map built into the time applet seems
to send gnome equally out to lunch when it hangs up.

No, sorry. Everything seemed to work, nvidia-driver was loaded and
nvidia-settings was fine. However, 3d-acceleration was not enabled so
this bug is still not gone. Also, trying to start X again flickers 3
times and then switches to vesa&low resolution. So it was just a
(partially) lucky boot.

I cannot reproduce this any longer. Printing works fine on both my
computers running Hardy. I can print both to PDF and to installed
printers.

I have a situation here, where it seems that the X autoconfiguration
works fine, but my monitor refuses to show any output with the refresh
rates chosen, thus even when autoconfiguration works, there is a need
for text-based tools to reconfigure. Since I have no output from X i
cannot login and rec
Do you want that I make this patch import the old preferences file if it
exists ? Would it makes you accept the patch ?

Under Gutsy, I use the command (from root):
echo "2008-04-07 09:30:00" > /proc/acpi/alarm
to tell my PC to wake from sleep (suspend to RAM) at given date and
time, and it works flawlessy (under Feisty too).
Under Hardy, it doesn't at all. Some more testing showed that:
1)
changing to new, libgnome is not actively maintained and we don't intend
to work on it. gvfs is the newer stack and only available since hardy so
there is no wonder gnome-open which is there for years is used rather
than it right now

the source code of gnome-control-center by "apt-get source", build and install
it to /usr/local/bin. A different program was built... It looks like this:

And please check this attachment for the original version of gnome-
display-properties. It looks like the source code is not sync with the
binary. And the program made from the source code works well, while the
program installed by the liveCD will cause bug. Anybody can explain
this?
