I'm not entirely sure. As you can see, at that time I specifically was
not using networkmanager. This was a known atheros bug (but I can't find
it!) and I did not even know nm didn't support it.

I suspect have some ALSA issues:
I upgraded (or rather: installed from scratch) from Feisty to Hardy (beta).
Although my troublesome soundcard (HDA-Intel) is supported/detected flawlessly,
