I can confirm this for hardy as well, my laptop is a Samsung P35 (more info in
attachment).
This bug occurs very rarely for me (once every 20 boots or so), but it seems to
be caused by heavy network traffic shortly after the activation of WLAN.
When it happens, it looks like this:

In my case, network manager didn't know the connection down, but when I
told it to reconnect to my SSID, it was able to, without having to go
through to cycle the driver with modprobe.

After a reboot, I find that the latest kernel (-24) does not boot. I get
some segmentation fault right around the time it's mounting root (didn't
write it down). The previous kernel (-8) boots, but X no longer starts
and bash crashes if I try to log in at the console:

I posted this before reloading the page and didn't see your comment
until after.
Since the user reported an up to date system is not affected, I am going

I experience the same thing on a 945, with compiz, using EXA and
MigrationHeuristic greedy. xv used to work with these settings some days ago.
Now, same as you: it starts but uses 100%cpu and it is super slow. More system

On my latest upgrade in Hardy, several package installs have failed due
apparently to bugs in gconftool-2 and gtk-update-icon-cache. If I now
try to remove these packages, I get the following error:

bug for compiz asking to change their default shortcuts, since they
conflict with Amarok (Applicaton use are more important than Desktop
