Further to my previous comment, it isn't that I have 5 IDE *devices*
since the error is too many *interfaces*. This lead me to unplug my
CDROM driver from the on-board IDE port and disable it in the BIOS.

problems (similar to yours) when using an Award Bios in combination with some
drives.
Can you tell us which kind of Bios you're using, how many harddisks you
have and the output of "sudo fdisk -lu"

today I upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu4 and I can confirm
scrolling seems to be much faster. When looking at 'top' it is 30-40% for
Firefox and around 30% Xorg. So it helped me.

I stay on Ubuntu 7.10 now wiht OpenOffice 2.3 and the problem there
isn't. The Ubuntu Hardy is installed on another PC and the problem
there isn't also on this. I think that was a problem of KDE 3.5.8 so

I think this was once fixed by an update, but a subsequent hal update
means dapper is still suffering from this bug. Workaround on dapper is
downgrading hal.
No idea about edgy...

Yes, I think this could fit that SRU category.
I have also submitted the patch upstream. Maybe it will be included in
the upcoming 3.3 release, which we then can try to get into gutsy-
backports.
