I also tested to only kill NetworkManager and openvpn is running correctly.
When I ran NetworkManger-Openvpn it works but the description of the wired
network in the tray-icon
got a really long name and then it did not work.

Normally, the wifi kill switch of my Dell D620 is enabled because I
don't need wifi often. If the system was booted with an enabled kill
switch, then I can't reactive the wireless interface any more. Only a
reboot with deactivated kill switch enables the interface again.
Have you run the command 'sudo apt-get install -f' in the terminal?
Did you add any third party repos or install software in an unsupported
manner?

Can you reproduce this desktop lock-up, or was it a one time thing? I
tried doing the same thing (Selecting 'Delete downloaded packages after

I do not use a mouse on this laptop although cat /proc/bus/input/devices
reports a PS/2 Mouse in addition to my touchpad.
