Well I've discovered that this was a clash between the compiz way of
handling multiple (virtual) desktops and the gnome way. I currently
can't open up the display settings dialogue (due to the Alpha4 blocking-

I have the same problem when 'unix extensions = yes' is set on the Samba
server side. Server and client are both Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy).

Ok, I can confirm Paul Hoell's comment on 7.10. (sudo shows the fault,
kdesu and kdesudo don't).

xorg.conf first. Also please note that when I start my Laptop with VGA
plugged in or restart X with VGA plugged in, I get the resolution I wish
for, however it starts flickering like crazy and goes black for the time
when I use my mouse.

I had a similar problem (Gutsy/AMD64, 2.6.22-14-generic, kvm
1:16-1ubuntu2), in that tap0 wasn't visible (ifconfig -a) on my host,
and kvm reported "can't add tap0 to bridge eth1: Operation not
supported" when starting.
However, after my host finished booting and everything network related

Mikko, "safe mode" doesn't use the openchrome driver, I think it uses
the VESA driver.
Any problems with safe mode are unrelated to this bug report.
