appears the issue is that the debian/ttf-dejavu-extra.defoma-hints file
for Gutsy had a fix from Arne to correct Oblique vs Italic for Serif

I have configured (via System>Preferences>Removable Drives and Media)
the system not to automatically mount and not to browse newly mounted
media. Even so, it still does.
- If I plug in a USB memory it is both mounted and then browsed
My fix for Kubuntu Guidance was based on the following observations. I
am not familiar with the way HAL is *supposed* to work, so I don't know
whether this constitutes a bug in HAL.
The problem lies in the following section of /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux
/hal-system-power-suspend-linux:
