burned, and installed. I got tired of it, so I reloaded a fresh instal of

I'm quite a linux newbie myself, but applying a patch seems to be an easy task,
according to what I've read on the wikipedia under patch
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patch_%28Unix%29). On ubuntu, you have to install
the package patch first, in order to apply the patch via command line

It seems that this was caused by a hardware malfunction. With my new CD
/DVD-player and a 80-bit cable instead of a 40-bit one it works nice. I
tried on my other systems but where never able to reproduce.

If crashing on start is reproducible you could maybe try to set a
breakpoint on SDL_Init and step it from there. If it crashes randomly
after half a minute it is more difficult, unless you ltrace it and find
some near-crash function call you can set breakpoint on.
