The same lockups occur with the vesa driver. So it's highly probable
that the intel driver is not the source of the problem.

you need to remove all old kde4 packages before installing the newer version,
do a search for the kde4 packages and remove them.
dpkg -l | grep "4:3.97.0" | grep '^ii'
That should list them all, try with "4:3.96.0" as well to make sure you don't
have anything from RC1 as well.

Ok, tried to install Gutsy from the "official" Canonical CD and it fails
during install, as above. Even in safe graphics mode.
This on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600, with Trident Cyberblade graphics
card. A card, if I may say so, that worked out-of-the-box since the 2006
LTS version.
My only hope
I had feisty installed on my HP Pavillion Laptop, and migrated to
Gutsy, everything worked o.k., then Gutsy completely crashed and I had
to reinstall from scratch after formatting my partition, (I duel boot).
Now it takes a loong time to boot, 3-4 minutes at least, muuuch
slower at any rate.

In theory a rebuild should fix it, but it fails to build from source
(hardy, amd64):

There is no indication the new comment is the same issue and the gdb log
has no backtrace, if you have a crasher send it using apport rather so
the retracing is working automatically on launchpad
