Well, I've wondered if it was the nVidia driver, but shouldn't the
problem persist after turning off compiz? The nvidia-glx-new driver
works perfectly as long as compiz is turned off, and I also had the same
problems on Feisty; bug 145112 says that the driver problem didn't exist
in Feisty.

I have since retried Kubuntu 7.04 and it works perfectly. I the tried
the i386 alternate installer CD and it also failed with the same
message..
I the tried the Alternate installer RC version of 7.10 and it produced the
following error that may help:

My friends ASus AS9301WSMi laptop worked flawlessly with Feisty, but
once he did an online upgrade to Gutsy, the new kernel would not boot.
Unfortunately he rashly reinstalled Feisty, so the evidence has
disappear
Since ScummVM0.10 is now in the Hardy archives, Sarien can be removed.
