Bingo. I had previously switched the theme to Crux.
Unfortunately, I have since removed and re-installed OOo, and I no
longer see the problem. So switching back to the Human theme might not
tell us anything useful. Also, I'm reluctant to test further as this is
on one of my production machines, an
roaming mode works ok... try using static ip address and with WPA-PSK
TKIP. it doesn't work on my part.

In your boot options, you need to add: acpi=off
Look in /boot/grub/menu.lstput it before "ro" in the linux
entries.
OR, do it manually from the grub menu the first time to see if it fixes the
problem. Apparently the rt2500 driver truly hates whatever the kernel is doing
for acpi.
Bernardo Innocenti recalls having fixed this particular issue in the
OLPC fork. He suggests cherry-picking useful changes from:

Update. I've just tried copying files from my ntfs-3g partition and got
35MB/s. Then I started trying other files on my ext3 partition and found
that some big files actually get read at 15-20MB/s. Most of big files
are 5MB/s though. Seems like very heavy fragmentation. :(

Oddly, my tests now seem to indicate the problem is Ubuntu, not
Edubuntu. I was able to install Kubuntu and Edubuntu together, both on
single partions (only a separate /tmp partition). Oooh. /tmp shows
some buffered areas like "Tracker-xeno". I wonder if that is related.
I'll try that next.

For whatever it's worth, I think I agree with sol. If you look at common
practices when installing web servers, it seems to be that the system is
setup to point to a working instance.
The way I've used the default apache2 config scripts is to have one
directory per enabled site underneath /var/www
