After a fresh install both GDM and X load with correct resolution.
On another partition, with feisty upgrade to gutsy I had to remove all entries
from xorg.conf except the correct one in order to make it load correctly.
I don't have that partition anymore so I can't keep testing it.

My Samsung P35 laptop worked good with Ubuntu Feisty 7.04.
Now I've upgraded my working Ubuntu to the recently published Ubuntu
7.10. In a few seconds after log in my laptop stops to react to
Fn+LightUp Fn-LightDown key combinations. Even worse: the screen starts
to flicker badly several minutes.

I have this same problem with an X61s, but it works about 50% of the
time. And with the acpi_sleep=s3_bios kernel parameter I can then see
that same yellow INU. Without I only see a black screen (since it does
not turn on the backlight). And this is in Ubuntu 7.10 (fresh install)

A fresh install of 7.10 on an external HD corrupted the primary HD's
MBR.
The primary HD has XP. The installation of Ubuntu on the external HD
installed GRUB on the primary HD, so when the external HD is not
connected, GRUB does not load.

I encounter the same issue on a d630. After a while the wakeups count jumps
from less than 100 to ~6K per seconds.
I've switched to console removing all unused processes and kernel modules but

Comparing the two Xorg.0.log files there are several things that catch
my attention:
1. (WW) "dbe", "dri", "glx", "vbe" will not be loaded unless you've specified
it to be loaded elsewhere. ?

It's more than a usability issue. Sometimes there's *no* workaround
(e.g. when that happened to me on a PC at work and I was miles away
without anyone to fix it locally). I like your solution very much, it
would fix this problem without compromising security. I second it.
