I guess that 640x480 is better than a non working X so you have to work with
console which is pain for Newbies. Since displayconfig-gtk is used in rescue
mode it is needed and afaik it produces a working xorg with maybe wrong
resolution but this could be fixed with a text editor and irc support.

save any resolution in xorg.conf (there is no resolution saved) but thanks to

cards and above need any proprietary driver.
Try the "ati" driver without any xorg.conf and attach the Xorg.0.log.
But first make sure you have properly removed any fglrx stuff.
